Updating From Class...
Sorry for the lack of updates, life has been pretty lame, things included are my old car catching on fire and then getting into a car accident. This city is out to get me. I've done some new work, mostly learning new processes, but also was in a show last month in which I showcased new work - well, three photos. I'll present those later.
However, I've been also taking a digital media class, which requires us to use photoshop. Our first project was a self portrait, which wasn't any thing unusual for me. However, our second was a surreal landscape, which didn't need to mean actual nature.
This is how mine looked durng the mid-critique.

I'll probably edit it a bit more, but this is the basic idea. I never really used photoshop for more than basic photo editing, i.e. color balance, so this is something I am experimenting with - actually manipulation of photographs.

Here we go again.
Haven't updated in a while...I've been dreadfully busy with school and work. 17 hours of school and this coming week I work 6 days.
However, I have been learning how to do Cyanotypes...making a few prints, more tomorrow. I'll try to scan some of those in and display them. My first one was horrible, but they have gotten better.
Here is the rest of those Mug Shots series. Comments, as always, are very much welcome!

back to basics
I'm going to just continue with my fetish series. But this times, it's like a mini series within my fetish series. This is what I actually showed at the open studio here at college. It's a series of gagging photos, but show in a mugshot way - which is what I essentially named the series: "Mug Shots." They were shown in a grid-like fashion all next to each other. I did some event photographs there and sometimes would stop to see what people would say about my work. Popular words were "creepy" and "disturbing" but I believe it to be successful.
One thing it did was make people actually -stop- and talk about the work, which I find very important. I noticed that people would just walk quickly while viewing most of the art work, which is a shame, but I was excited to see many people stop and converse about these photographs. I believe it evoked an emotion.
These are the ones I showed but later on added 4 more photos to the set, which I will present later.

Can't Eat; Can't Sleep; I'm Sick.
That's a lie. I'm not really sick, but it is true that I can't sleep...which is a shame considering I have class at 9am. I think I will just exhaust myself today so I am forced to go to bed at a reasonable hour tomorrow. Last semester as an undergraduate student...high five, you guys!
I'm going to continue with the Kegadoru series...these ones portray more of the innocence that the original Japanese concept had...I didn't want to directly copy every photo they had, but provide a good variety from a more Western view.

Same model as in one of my last photos, but I believe the setting changes the emotion quite a bit.

She is completely legal, by the way...

This photo probably represents the closest to the "Japanese" kegadoru photos...all white clothing, wearing undergarments and bandages. Often times they have needles and scissors as well. You'll probably see her in a lot of my photos...we lived together for a while, so she was readily available for modeling at short notices.
Friday I am picking up my photo package which contains 11 rolls of various 120 film and a pack of 11x14 paper. I'll hopefully get started that day also on my new project, assuming I can get the model's schedules worked out. I have a place in mind that I wish to do the photo, however I have not been there for a good couple years and am afraid it has changed or maybe isn't even there at all. Maybe I will have to visit earlier in the day to make sure. Last time I was there, the old building was still standing, the grass had grown to a good 3 feet and the lock on the fence around the building was open. I don't need to enter the building for this project, but without the actual building it would ruin it a bit for me.
Also, there is another photographer named Shannon Rhea who comes up when you google. This is bull shit bulll shitttt. I obviously don't feel threatened because I think my work speaks for itself. Is this an elitist attitude? Maybe.

Bandages every where...
For a good portion of my fetish project, I focused on "Kegadoru," which means basically "injured idol." It's this fetish where people like it when girls are bandaged and look injured. You can google for other photos if you care and are more interested. I really liked this look, but also included a couple men in my project.
Here are three of them, I'll post others later...all women in this post, however.

They don't use blood in this fetish - it's more about the look rather than being actually injured.

Always in moderation.
Of course, starting out with a photo from my Fetish series.

Media fetish.
Now, as most college kids, I don't have much money. Nor do my parents just shower me in gifts and money, despite the fact that I would very much love that. It's this very reason why 1. I haven't upgraded my digital camera that I bought 4 or 5 years ago and 2. I don't have any good lighting equipment. Frankly put, I can't afford it...with college, paying rent + other bills, in addition to random photo expenses and the fact that I only work retail due to my hectic school schdedule(hello 17 hours this semester), it's no wonder I really don't have the latest equipment. However, I am a firm believer in that you don't need this! Sure, it would be awesome to have it but I hate the thought that just because you have better equipment/a better camera/etc than someone else, you'll take better photos - like it's almost magic. For this reason, I've had to somewhat ghetto up my lights, using worklights with daylight balanced bulbs. Any one else want to suggest a cheap way to make a good, even ghetto, lighting setup? Or if you'd just like to donate a couple hundred dollars or so, I would gladly accept that.
All slightly different, due to the way I did the final editing.
